Historical Background – In July 1940, two days before the official start of the Battle of Britain, No. 610 Squadron “County of Chester” arrived at RAF Biggin Hill to join Nos. 72, 92, and 66 Squadrons of No. 11 Group. Flying Spitfire Mk IAs with “DW” squadron codes, these pilots became a crucial part of Britain’s defensive line.
On 24 August 1940, Sgt Ronald “Ronnie” Hamlyn flew three sorties in Spitfire R6891, claiming one Ju 88 and four Bf 109s—a feat that earned him the distinction of being the RAF’s first “Ace in a day.” The Mk IA featured eight Browning 7.7 mm machine guns, a Rotol 3-blade constant-speed propeller, and the early “Malcolm Hood” canopy with a curved edge for improved visibility.
