The Sopwith Triplane stands out as the first military triplane to see operational service—a bold leap in design by the Sopwith Aviation Company that offered superior climb and agility compared to its biplane predecessors. Its prototype, N500, took to the skies on 28 May 1916, and made an immediate impression when designer Harry Hawker looped the aircraft three times on its very first flight.
By mid-1916, N500 was sent to Dunkirk under RNAS evaluation, where it quickly demonstrated formidable performance, earning the trust of frontline units. By late 1916, it was actively used by No. 1 Naval Squadron RNAS, symbolising the innovation and fighting spirit of Sopwith’s design ethos.
This Classic Metal Print captures Sopwith Triplane N500, as seen in service with No. 1 Naval Squadron RNAS in late 1916. The aircraft is artistically set against a World War I trench-map backdrop, purely atmospheric rather than geographically accurate.
The insignia is presented here as artist impressions, based on later references dating from around the 1950s. While not period-authentic, they are derived from designs believed to have originated with the original squadron insignia, many of which have been lost to time.
