The RAF Type D Roundel, introduced in 1942, became the definitive insignia of Royal Air Force aircraft through the latter half of WWII and into the post-war jet age. Our in-house design presents this emblem against a vivid red background, paying tribute to the world-famous Red Arrows display team and their iconic Hawk T1 aircraft.
Produced on Gloss Chromaluxe Aluminium using advanced dye sublimation, this Classic Metal Print delivers vibrant colour and sharp detail with a subtle, non-reflective finish. The frameless, modern presentation is achieved with our specially designed float mount block, creating a 2 cm standoff from the wall for effortless display.
Historical Background – The Type D Roundel simplified the earlier designs by removing the yellow outer ring, producing a cleaner and more striking emblem that became standard across RAF aircraft from mid-1942 onwards. It adorned legendary fighters such as the Spitfire Mk IX and Hawker Tempest, as well as early post-war jets like the Meteor. Today, it is instantly recognisable on the brilliant red Hawks of the Red Arrows—the RAF Aerobatic Team—who carry this insignia to audiences around the world.
