    Description

The Sopwith Triplane remains one of the most striking designs of the First World War. First deployed in 1917 by the Royal Naval Air Service, its triple-wing configuration gave pilots a marked edge in climb rate and agility, allowing them to outmanoeuvre many German fighters of the period. This innovation reinforced Sopwith’s status as one of Britain’s foremost aircraft manufacturers.

This Classic Metal Print portrays Sopwith Triplane N5454, flown by Flight Sub-Lieutenant R. P. Minifie of No. 1 Squadron, Royal Naval Air Service, during October 1917. Edo’s artwork sets the aircraft against a stylised World War I trench map, an artistic backdrop designed to capture the atmosphere of the era without representing a specific geographic location.

The insignia is presented here as artist impressions, based on later references dating from around the 1950s. While not period-authentic, they are derived from designs believed to have originated with the original squadron insignia, many of which have been lost to time.
