The Sopwith Triplane was a groundbreaking fighter of the First World War—developed as a private venture by the Sopwith Aviation Company, with its daring three-wing configuration giving rise to both exceptional manoeuvrability and a widened upward field of view. The prototype, serial N500, first flew on 28 May 1916, piloted by Harry Hawker, who famously looped the aircraft three times in quick succession—showcasing its remarkable agility.
Soon after its debut, N500 was sent to France in mid-1916 for evaluation by “A” Naval Squadron, 1st Naval Wing, where it demonstrated its phenomenal rate of climb and nimble handling in combat-like testing. It subsequently entered limited operational use with No. 1 Naval Squadron RNAS by late 1916, helping to cement Sopwith’s reputation for pioneering fighter design.
This Aero Craft Printed Panel presents the iconic Sopwith Triplane N500, as flown by No. 1 Naval Squadron RNAS in late 1916. Edo’s composition places the aircraft against the evocative backdrop of a World War I trench map—serving as an atmospheric artistic setting rather than a literal map of the area.
The insignia is presented here as artist impressions, based on later references dating from around the 1950s. While not period-authentic, they are derived from designs believed to have originated with the original squadron insignia, many of which have been lost to time.
Each Aero Craft Printed Panel begins with a Matt Chromaluxe Aluminium print, produced via advanced dye sublimation for exceptional clarity and fine detail. It is then mounted onto our signature hand-riveted aluminium frame, inspired by authentic aircraft fuselage construction, transforming the artwork into a true aviation collectible.
