The RAF Type C.1 Roundel, introduced in 1942, was prominently displayed on Royal Air Force aircraft during the later stages of WWII. Our in-house design pairs this historic insignia with the bold black and white invasion stripes, which were hand-painted on Allied aircraft in the lead-up to the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. These high-contrast markings ensured quick visual recognition, reducing the risk of friendly fire during the largest amphibious invasion in history.
Produced on Matt Chromaluxe Aluminium using advanced dye sublimation, this Classic Metal Print offers rich colour, exceptional clarity, and a refined, non-reflective finish. The frameless, modern presentation is achieved with our specially designed float mount block, creating a 2 cm standoff from the wall and allowing for effortless display.
Historical Background – The Type C.1 roundel was the standard RAF insignia by mid-1942 and continued in use through the D-Day operations of 1944 and beyond. In preparation for the Normandy invasion, black and white “invasion stripes” were painted on the wings and fuselages of Allied aircraft to enhance visual identification during the massive combined aerial and ground assault. This design is closely tied to aircraft such as the Spitfire Mk IX, Hawker Typhoon, and De Havilland Mosquito, which flew pivotal missions during the campaign.
