    Description

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IA is one of the most celebrated fighters of the Second World War, immortalized for its role during the Battle of Britain. Fighter Studios’ captivating imagery showcases this iconic aircraft from No. 610 Squadron, “County of Chester,” which flew from RAF Biggin Hill—one of the most active fighter bases of 1940.

Produced on Chromaluxe Aluminium using advanced dye sublimation, this Classic Metal Print combines vivid colours with exceptional sharpness for a gallery-grade finish. The frameless, contemporary look is achieved with our specially designed float mount block, creating a 2 cm standoff from the wall and allowing for effortless display.

Historical Background – RAF Biggin Hill, due to its strategic location, was one of the most involved fighter stations during the Battle of Britain. While home to Nos. 72, 92, and 66 Squadrons of No. 11 Group, the airfield was reinforced by No. 610 Squadron “County of Chester” in July 1940, just two days before the “official” start of the battle.

Flying Spitfire Mk IAs coded “DW,” the squadron counted among its pilots Sgt Ronald “Ronnie” Hamlyn, who on 24 August 1940 flew three sorties, claiming a Ju 88 and four Bf 109s—becoming the RAF’s first “Ace in a day.” Hamlyn’s aircraft, R6891, was a standard Mk IA equipped with eight Browning 7.7 mm machine guns, Rotol 3-blade constant-speed propeller, and an early “Malcolm Hood” canopy with a curved top edge that offered better visibility and space. Hamlyn ended the war with 11 confirmed victories.
