The Star and Bars insignia is one of the most recognized symbols of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during the Second World War. Our in-house design showcases this historic roundel over the iconic black and white invasion stripes, which were hand-painted on Allied aircraft for the D-Day operations of June 6, 1944. These bold stripes were essential for quick visual identification, reducing the risk of friendly fire during the massive Allied air campaign over Normandy.
Produced on Matt Chromaluxe Aluminium using advanced dye sublimation, this Classic Metal Print combines vibrant colour and exceptional detail with a subtle, non-reflective finish. The frameless, modern presentation is achieved with our specially designed float mount block, creating a 2 cm standoff from the wall and allowing for effortless display.
Historical Background – The Star and Bars roundel, adopted by the USAAF in mid-1943, replaced the earlier white star-and-circle emblem, adding white horizontal bars to improve recognition at distance. This insignia was in use through the remainder of WWII and became an enduring symbol of American air power.
The black and white invasion stripes were a distinctive feature of Allied aircraft during the Normandy invasion, painted on wings and fuselages to distinguish them from enemy planes during intense and chaotic operations. Together, the roundel and stripes represent an era of courage, innovation, and unprecedented aerial warfare.
